i suck at cantonese and mandarin but im half cantonese and my friends are pretty good with mandarin and cantonese but its always 1 sided, cantonese ppl can speak and learn mandarin easily. mandarin/taiwanese try to speak cantonese and can't even come close . And its cuz cantonese is like only a language.. in verbal only and not in literature, unless its formal cantonese like in songs..but u wouldnt talk like that in real life, its all about the slang la!!! WAH!!! ahhh wor.... bor...etc jee ng jee doh ah?

I haven't read all the replies so sorry if I'm repetitive.. Mando is my suggestion because career and travel wise you'll get much much further. All parts of China can at least vaguely understand Mando, whereas Canto is only really spoken in two provinces in China.. Only HK knows almost no Mando.
Reason y there's more Canto people around is because Canto people were the first to immigrate to other countries.. thats y there's a lot more around atm..

I know canto but cant really read it. Want to learn mando but cant really understand it lol. Got a few ppl helping me learn mando but itz not going very well lol. But i just thk if u can understand wat they are saying if itz in mando or in canto, it wouldnt really matter. You can still communicate with canto or mando. I spk canto and just bout understand wat my mando friends say. So we can talk together in chinese but i spk in canto and they speak in mando. It works, but it does depend if they know canto and mando. if u know wat i mean. lol rele?! wow.. round where i am.. canto and mando are too different to mix..

I come from a cantonese speaking backround and yes it is at the moment what most of my friends from England speak, BBC wise. I myself find this very easy as my parents forced it onto me from an early age. Howvever having experienced a few years in university alot friends and students come over from mainland china, taiwan and malaysia. Therefore most of them spoke mandarin. Yes cantonese is my first language but i some how found that madarin sounds alot better. I ve slowly but surely been trying to learn mandarin ever since and it is understandable to my friends but it takes more time at the mo for me to change ever so slightly some words which sound familiar. Mandarin i would believe to be an easier option to take. Not just because it is used more but also listening to mandain sounds, they sound alot better lol, ( my own view here, so dont get all defensive).
