I just wanted to get your guys opinion on these two ways of dling, basically, which one does more harm to your computer.  I'm kinda biased, cause throughout college all I did was bitorrent dl and when I did that my computer got progressively worse.  I don't know if it's because I have a old computer, but it just came to the point where it couldn't even play videos up to 700MB in size, it was too slow.  It would play, but the video would be in slow motion, it just couldn't keep up.  What do you guys think?

neither of them do any harm to your computer
it just sounds like you've installed a lot of junk on your comptuer and all that junk has probably installed spyware and adware that's now bogging down your system

Really, I thought that dling of any form could hurt your computer, probably not quickly but it grows progressively.  Could it also have to do with where I dl from.  Cause I stopped bitorrent and switched to direct.  Most direct comes from Megaupload and I heard that that site has lots of spyware too.

Bittorent is ok but you have to be careful cause of the uploading.  People have gotten caught from their ISP's for downloading off bittorent cause of the 3rd party group finding out and contact your ISP.  Also some stuff can contain viruses so make sure you got a antivirus on your computer.

@lovesamz
downloading cannot harm your comptuer... it's the content of what you're downloading
like i said, it sounds like you've just downloaded and installed a lot of garbage on your computer. and all that stuff is now hogging up resources

@ECABlingBling
your ISP will more than likely not just give out your personal information to 3rd parties. it goes against privacy laws (although it depends on where you live). the 3rd party would probably need a warrart for your ISP to comply

Well, when I'm dling I'm referring to dling series.  I dl a lot of Korean series and that stuff is usually 700MB in size, I never dl stuff to install in my computer unless it's necessary.  So can the same be said even if I'm not dling stuff to install, but just to watch.

there could be a few more possibilities
1) You need to defrag your drive(s)
2) You've used up almost all the space on your C: drive and windows doesn't have enough space to do what it needs to do
3) Someone else uses that computer and they have installed software with out your knowledge
4) You have codec conflicts

the fourth option is the worst case
from my own experience, i've found it's very difficult to remove unwanted codecs from your computer and i just end up formatting and starting all over again hoping that i don't make the same mistake again

Now that I've read your possibilities, I know that number two and three don't apply, and I don't know what number one means.  But I think it could be number four.  Because I remember in college I had installed DivX codec, but about a year or two ago I installed Combined Community Codec.  I don'tremember if I ever unistalled it.  Wow, the things you learn in forums, no wonder I sometimes hear stuff about not installing two codecs at once.  Thanks Obiwong.

Whenever I have codec problems (conflicts, errors or it wasn't found on my system).. I would just download the latest K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and re-install all the codecs. That usually solve the problems as the installer would uninstall codecs found on the system and re-install fresh ones to the system Wink

Here's how it works

If your lazy and don't want people to leech off you then use bittorent if you have the time to download a full movie length use

direct download sites but of course their is the slow speed to consider Smiley If you have a dynamic IP you can simple change it

and get new downloads for lets say rapid share is a direct download site with fast speed ^^~ but if you don't have dynamic IP then

GG

"they can't do no harm"?
if we negate that, we get: "they can do harm"
great!

A bit late on the topic, but will still give my input for future references...

Number one, as pointed out by ObiWong, is what I think could be your issue, or at least one of the factors. Defragging your system every once in a while helps keep your hard disk organized. Also, more than likely, you have a bunch of spyware/adwares clogging up your system. As long as you surf the net, you are sure to get them. Keeping them in tact by cleaning them on a regular basis would be a good idea. Use spypot and adaware (although the new version uses unnecessary resources) and also try to run some registry cleaners such as CCleaner, wise registry cleaner and wise disk cleaner. Run all these small apps on a consistent basis, and your computer will live a longer, healthier life =)

from my experience...
downloading doesn't affect ur comp systems.. but surely it affects the internet bandwith usage.

Leaving comp on for long for dl does affect ur computer systems

Overheats in the case where you are using an old comp

too much porn with trojans haha

back to topic..
Nothing can beat direct dl speeds if it's not limited and you have full bandwidth, but that's not always the case unless you paid a premium for that service. So BT tends to be faster in general, especially if you have a lot of seeders.
