WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sure, instant messaging is fast and efficient. For many teenagers, it's also a great way to avoid those OMG moments -- that's ''omigod'' -- of mortifying face-to-face confrontations.
More than four in 10, or 43 percent, of teens who instant message use it for things they wouldn't say in person, according to an Associated Press-AOL poll released Thursday. Twenty-two percent use IMs to ask people out on dates or accept them, and 13 percent use them to break up. full story: http://http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Instant-Messaging-AP-Poll.htmli can totally see this happening: "lyKe OMG we nEeD 2 sEe teh otHer PeoPlez lulz XD ur n0t secksi enuf 4 mE XDDDDD kthxbye"

that so cold you don't even have the courage to look him/her in the face to tell them it's not working out if you're not ready for the consequence of a relationship then don't get into one

getting with someone on msn is also lame, but getting to know the person through msn and then meeting up in person and getting together when they meet up is different.
To me the only acceptable ways of getting together or breaking up with someone is either face to face or on the fone.

It's easier for the person trying to break up... but that's so impersonal and inconsiderate of the other person's feelings
it's already bad enough to be dumped, cant even get a proper breakup?

i suppose only teens with short term relationships would get away with that. if i were to try to break up with my bf over msn, im sure he would bombard me with phonecalls and show up at my house instead of just ending it with a msg. so no, i wouldn't break up over msn. that's just cold.

it's so evil and saddening to see that it occurs so often.. when u break up with them over msn.. u dunno how hurt they are... sometimes it might lead them to go do dumb things... face2face is a much more appropriate method .. at least it shows that u took that person's feelings into consideration

Breaking up over instant messaging is just bad. It's impolite, discourteous, mean, disrespectful and etc. You just don't do taht. It might be the easy way out, but with something like breaking up with someone, you should do it in person. Imagine someone pulled a prank, they hacked into your account and broke up with your gf, but it was all a mistake. My friends know that I wouldn't use instant messaging for something like that so i'm covered.
Breaking up over a phone call is a little better. I think you have to do it face to face. If you're scared to see the other person's reaction when you break up, then you don't have teh courage to follow through with the decision.
